Executive Chef Ryan Jackson

Ryan Jackson (1)

I let the seasons dictate my menu and never manipulate the ingredients. I showcase one particular seasonal ingredient for a dish and let it speak for itself.
~Chef Ryan Jackson~

About the Chef

Growing up as the son of fruit farmers in Reedley, California, Ryan Jackson was no stranger to fresh, seasonal ingredients. He learned the basics of cooking at an early age from watching his mother and grandmothers. Those memories have been the driving inspiration for Chef Jackson’s farm-to-table, ingredient-driven style of cooking featured at School House Restaurant and Tavern.

At the Apple Cellar Bistro in Ashland, Oregon Jackson realized his calling was to be in the restaurant business full-time. It was at this unassuming local restaurant that he had the opportunity to master the basic skills needed to advance his culinary career.

In 2000 Chef Jackson graduated from the prestigious California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, Ca. He executed highly refined, sophisticated cuisine while he worked as Chef Tournant with acclaimed Chef Robert Curry at Napa Valley’s Domaine Chandon. Time spent at Chandon sparked a fascination for the complexities of pairing food & wine.

Chef Jackson moved on to become a Sous Chef for Far Niente Winery where his education of food & wine pairings continued and became proficient in the selection of gourmet foods and spirits.

In 2001 Chef Jackson accepted the position as Banquet Chef at Napa Valley’s Brix Restaurant and was promoted to Executive Chef by 2002. During his more than five years at Brix, Chef Jackson transformed the restaurant’s original menu from Asian fusion to a clean, California cuisine which received rave reviews.

Chef Jackson’s extensive knowledge of wine lead him to conducting winemaker dinners such as Costa Brown, Rudd and David Ramey. During his tenure at Brix, the young chef also served as Culinary Consultant for Silverado Vineyards in Yountville ultimately creating their food and wine vineyard tour and tasting experience.

Chef Jackson was the featured Chef for four consecutive years at Silverado Vineyards for the Napa Valley Wine Auction hospitality events. He also conducted cooking classes for Viking Range Cooking Schools in San Francisco and Walnut Creek, California.

Jackson was excited at the opportunity to return to his roots as the Executive Chef & Partner at School House. His style of contemporary New American cuisine incorporates exceptional quality ingredients from the nearby countryside he is so familiar with.

The 38-year-old chef, whose presentation style is elegant but familiar, allows the quality of ingredients to take center stage.
